About Structured Family Care: eligibility, pay, timelines, benefits and more

Structured Family Caregiving (SFC) is an Indiana Medicaid program that pays family members and trusted loved ones a tax-free daily stipend to provide full-time care at home. If you’re already helping a parent, spouse, sibling, or close friend with daily tasks (bathing, meals, medication, mobility, supervision), SFC may be a good option.

The program is funded by Indiana Medicaid and administered by the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA). It runs through licensed provider agencies like Indiana Family Caregivers who support families with training, compliance, paperwork and compensation.

There is no cost to the care recipient or the caregiver. Medicaid pays Indiana Family Caregivers, and we pay caregivers a tax-free weekly stipend while maintaining compliance, training requirements and other necessary support.

No. SFC serves young adults with disabilities, people with traumatic brain injuries, and individuals with chronic conditions that prevent independent living.

The eligibility requirement is medical, not age-based. The care recipient must need help with daily activities and meet Indiana’s Nursing Facility Level of Care threshold, no matter their age.

To be a paid SFC caregiver in Indiana, you must be at least 18 years old, live with the care recipient, pass a background check, and have a real relationship with the care recipient, whether you are their spouses, adult child, parent (of adult children only), sibling, grandchild, niece, nephew, cousin, in-law, or close friend.

It depends. Parents can be paid SFC caregivers for their adult children with disabilities (anyone 18 or older).

Indiana currently does not allow parents of minor children to be paid through the Attendant Care program. Parents of minors can still be paid through SFC for adult children, and other family members and friends can be paid caregivers for minors in some cases. Give us a call and we’ll walk through your specific situation.

Our Care Coordinators can help guide you through the Medicaid application process. Even if you don’t think you’re eligible based on income, it’s worth exploring the other ways to qualify (outside of income).

Typically, no. Structured Family Caregiving is intended for one caregiver who lives with and provides ongoing support to one care recipient. However, some families may qualify for exceptions. If you’re caring for multiple loved ones in the same household, reach out to our team. We’ll review your specific situation and explain what options may be available based on Indiana Medicaid guidelines.

Indiana Family Caregivers pays you every Friday, by direct deposit. We’ve heard from caregivers about the impact weekly pay has had on their finances and budgeting, but if you need your money a little sooner, we also offer fee-free early pay options for up to 70% of your paycheck.
