Structured Family Caregiving in Indiana

Through the Structured Family Caregiving (SFC) program, Indiana families can receive Medicaid financial support for the care they provide at home.

Who is Eligible for Structured Family Caregiving (SFC)?

Indiana Resident

You must currently live in Indiana to be a paid family caregiver under SFC.

Shared Residence

The client & caregiver must live in the same residence.

Medicaid Waiver

Qualify for the Pathways for Aging, Health & Wellness Waiver (H&W), or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) waiver and need consistent support at home.

Types of Care Covered by Structured Family Caregiving

Activities of Daily Life (ADLs): Basic self-care tasks performed daily that allow a person to live independently:

Mobility (Ambulating/Transferring) i.e. getting up up from a chair or transferring from a bed to a wheelchair 

Dressing: assisting with putting on appropriate clothing (including managing zippers or buttons)  

Feeding, whether by mouth or with a tube  

Bathing or showering, grooming tasks like shaving, brushing teeth, and combing hair 

Instrumental Activities of Daily Life (IADLs): more complex skills that manage a client’s household and life allowing them to live independently in a community:

Housekeeping i.e. cleaning, laundry, and taking out the trash 

Money Management: Handling finances – pay bills on time, manage bank accounts, and budgeting.  

Transportation: driving or arranging transportation to go to appointments and run errands.  

Medication Management: help them remember to take the right medicines at the right times, refill prescriptions.  

Shopping (Essentials): groceries, prescriptions, clothing or other necessities
